Applied Micro Circuits Corporation (also known as AppliedMicro, AMCC or APM) was a fabless semiconductor company designing network and embeddedPower ISA (including a Power ISA license), and server processor ARM (including an ARMv8-A license), optical transport and storage products.

History[edit]

In 2004, AMCC bought assets, IP and engineers concerning the PowerPC 400microprocessors from IBM for $227 million and they now market the processors under their own name. The deal also included access to IBM's SoC design methodology and advanced CMOSprocess technology.

In 2009, AppliedMicro changed their branding from AMCC to AppliedMicro, but still retain the name 'Applied Micro Circuits Corporation' officially.

In 2011, AppliedMicro became the first company to implement the ARMv8-A architecture with its X-Gene Platform. In November 2012 at ARM TechCon, AppliedMicro demonstrated advanced web search capabilities and the ability to handle big data workloads in an Apache Hadoop software environment with the X-Gene Platform using FPGA emulation. A silicon implementation of X-Gene was first exhibited publicly in June 2013.[3]

In April 2016, information about the forthcoming X-Gene 3 server chips was made available. The release schedule was for the second half of 2017. The company projected an improved performance, over the X-Gene 2, that with allow it to better compete with servers using the x86-64 architecture.[4]

In November 2016, MACOM Technology Solutions announced that they would purchase AppliedMicro.[5] The acquisition was completed on January 26, 2017.[6] MACOM then sold the processor division to the private equity firm The Carlyle Group during October 2017.

X-Gene based Gigabyte motherboard

The Processor Products group designed and marketed embedded microcontrollers as well as server processor, packet and storage processors. It included the network processors of former MMC Networks (acquired October 2000) with IBM PowerPC 4xx series microcontrollers (acquired April 2004).

Since purchasing the IBM PowerPC 400 family (under the 405 and 440 series product names), AppliedMicro developed the 460 series with 440 CPU, and a multicore Power architecture devices.

In January 2008, the AppliedMicro PowerPC 405EX was awarded Product of the Year 2007, by Electronic Product magazine.

In October 2011, AppliedMicro announced its X-Gene Platform, an ARM 64-bit solution aimed at cloud and enterprise servers.

Class-action lawsuit[edit]

In 2005, the company paid $60 million to settle a class-action lawsuit on behalf of investors against the company and certain of its current and former officers and directors.[8] The suit had charged the company with issuing a series of materially false and misleading statements concerning the company's operations and prospects for Q4 2001 and beyond.[9] Under the terms of the settlement, the company and defendants denied any wrongdoing. About half of the amount of the settlement was covered by insurance.[8]

First we need some info on our setup:

Now we can see the RAID at unit 0 is degraded. Let's find out which disk is giving us a problem.

Ok, port 1 is the disk that needs our attention.

First we need to remove the drive. This is like unmounting a filesystem so that we can work on it.

At this point, we need to see if the rescan picked the drive back up. If the port is N/A this is likey a bad drive and isn't responding. You'll need to replace the drive.

Since it's rebuilding as it's running, this could take a really long time. Should this fail, the drive will need to be replaced.

To identify the problem drive:

  • get current tasks (rebuild, etc)
    /usr/StorMan/arcconf getstatus 1
  • get current logical device
    /usr/StorMan/arcconf getconfig 1 ld
  • look at physical devices
    /usr/StorMan/arcconf getconfig 1 pd
  • look at dead drives
    /usr/StorMan/arcconf getlogs 1 dead tabular
  • look at devices with problems
    /usr/StorMan/arcconf getlogs 1 device tabular

When the drive has been replaced you should be able to see it by looking at the logical device again.

  • To view a particular physical drive:

  • To replace a drive:

Note: The number N of the array parameter is the Span Reference you get using MegaCli64 -CfgDsply -aALL and the number N of the row parameter is the Physical Disk in that span which you are replacing, not the slot number. S is the slot number of the NEW disk.

For example: to replace physical disk 0 in span 1 using disk ID 25 you would use the following command.

Warning: Drive rebuilds do not start automatically! You have to actually tell the controller to start rebuilding the drive.

To rebuild a drive that has a 'foreign' configuration:

  • Mark the drive as good
  • Clear the foreign setting
  • Set global hot spare - drive should start rebuilding after this
  • Stop consistency check:

If the 'megarc' executable isn't installed on the server, you can install it with:

get a listing of the drives and the status on them

lets get a listing of what drives are on the controller.

Get the serial numbers for the drives.

you can get a report of whats happened with the failed drive with this command (if there is anything to report)

You can try to turn the drive on in a failed state by issuing this command.x=the channel normally 0y=the id of the physical drive

you can also turn the drive off

show the status of a rebuilding drive that has been replaced

change the rebuild rate of the drive if you would like (its not recommended going over 40% going anything over 90% will render the disk unuseable for anything other then rebuiding rendering a not accessible system, I did this!)

Let's rebuild the array. This says do rebuild on adapter 0 (-a0) doing a rebuildarray on channel 0 disk 2 [0:2] (You can leave off -ShowProg if you don't want to monitor the rebuild progress)

Silence (not disable!) the raid alarm:
